Paul Pogba captained the side in the absence of Ecuador international Antonio Valencia as Man united defeated Leicester City 2-1 at the theatre of dreams on Friday. Pogba the captain on the night repaid the faith placed in him by the manager by scoring the clubs first league goal of the 2018/2019 league season from the spot.
Valencia was not available and Mourinho insists that Pogba was the obvious choice. Speaking in an interview with Sky SportsMourinho said, “Antonio Valencia is the captain but he is not here so Paul Pogba is the captain”. “He has come up through the academy and he knows what the club means.”
Pogba who have struggled for consistency since his big money arrival from Juventus in 2016 will be hoping to get things right this season as the Manchester United compete for the league trophy.
Manchester united finished in second position, 19 points adrift of winners Manchester while the missed out on the England FA cup to rivals Chelsea. The Red Devils, who have not won the title since 2013, brought in Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant in the summer transfer window ahead of the new campaign.
The Red Devils will visit Brighton next weekend in their Premier league.
