It was rumoured in Nigeria Football News that the German coach was called for explanation after a poor start in their world cup opener against Croatia, but the Nigeria football federation has dismissed such.
Seyi Akinwunmi the 1st vice president of Nigeria Football Federation has denied claims that Gernot Rohr was queried following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Croatia in their 2018 World Cup opener.
The Nigeria Super Eagles’ horrific display against the Croats in Kalinigrad on Saturday ignite the reports that Nigeria football body requested answers from the German tactician.
But report has it that the NFF deputy boss denied such speculations, reaffirming the body’s confidence in Rohr’s ability to lead the team past Group D.
He continued by saying if whether we [NFF] called for answers from Rohr? No one has queried the coach.
The Nigeria Football federation is solidly behind the coach. We have full confidence in him and believe he will qualify us to the next round the same way he qualified us to get here in the first place.
People have forgotten that same coach who all of a sudden they think does not know anything brought us here. We are not saying everything is perfect and that’s why there is team meetings and passage of information.
If it’s about querying the coach, nothing of such happened and I don’t believe it was an issue we should discuss. I am even informed that the players have agreed to overlook such thoughts and focus completely on the job at hand.”
Nigeria will have to get favourable results in their remaining two group matches, starting against Iceland on Friday before taking on Argentina on June 26.
