Coach Gbenga Ogunbote has given Rangers FC of Enugu a vote of confidence in the Aiteo, after the team eliminated title holders Akwa United to book a spot in the semi-finals of the Aiteo Cup.
Rangers defeated the 2017 champions 4-2 on penalty kicks after playing out a 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes of play.
“It was a sweet victory for Rangers,” Ogunbote said. “The players gave their all and we were able to make it. If you want to be a champion, you must beat a champion. So, we are now just two matches away from the trophy.”
He added, “We all want the trophy, but first we have to scale through the semi-final. The fans should continue to support the team and have confidence in us until we bring the cup to Enugu.”
The experienced coach revealed that his team were fired up to stop Akwa United after they lost to them in the league last season.
“The mind-set of the team is to win and having toiled so much, we just knew Akwa United will not stop us,” he said.
“We lost to them away in the league and drew at home, so there was the grudge not to lose to them again.”
Rangers set sight on the semi-finals where they will lurk horns with Kastina united. Kastina United defeated Kwara United 3-1 in the quarter-final.
